Fitness First Aid and CPR Course Description
The Fitness CPR course will provide the candidate with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and manage cardiorespiratory emergencies before, during and after exercise. The Fitness First Aid course will provide the candidate with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and manage soft tissue, musculoskeletal and environmental injuries and medical emergencies.
Course Content
The following topics are covered through a combination of lectures, practical sessions and scenarios:
Respiratory Complications:
- Side stitches
- Shortness of breath
- Rapid breathing (hyperventilation)
- Exercise-induced asthma
- Oxygen use (optional)
- Breath-holding and fainting
- Airway obstructions (choking)
- The unconscious victim (recovery position)
- Artificial respiration
- Disease transmission (pocket face mask/latex gloves)
- Exercise medications
Cardiovascular Complications:
- Lifestyle risk factors
- Angina pectoris
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Cool-down errors
- Heart-rate monitoring
- Exercise medications
- Heart palpitations and arrhythmias
- Sudden death (cardiac arrest)
- CPR (adult, 1 person)
Soft Tissue Injuries:
- Bleeding, shock and wounds
- Bruises, blisters and burns (tanning booths)
Musculoskeletal Injuries:
- Factors associated with injury
- General injury guidelines
- Foot injuries (metatarsalagia, neuroma, plantar fasciitis)
- Lower leg injuries (stress fractures and shin splints)
- Knee and low back injuries
- Head, neck and spinal injuries
- Joint injuries (bursitis and tendonitis)

Certification
Certification: BCRPA Recognized Workshop. Red Cross/Canadian Heart Foundation Heartsaver (A) (Fitness) Certification. Life Consultants Heartsaver (A) (Fitness) - must recertify annually. Upon completion of this course, the participant will receive a Life Consultants Certificate of Completion.
